CARING FOR YOUR HAIR UNIT
HAIR CARE & MAINTENANCE GUIDE.
-
- Your Amoke Ade Hair unit is made from 100% human hair, which means it needs proper care and maintenance to keep it looking and feeling its best.
- If you want your wig unit to last, you have to care for it the same way you would your own hair. Just like your natural hair, human hair can become dry, tangled, brittle or damaged when it is not properly cared for.
-
With the right routine, however, your unit can maintain its softness, shine, texture and overall appearance for multiple wears.
-
Brush and Detangle Your Hair Unit Regularly.
- One of the simplest ways to maintain your unit is to keep it properly detangled. Always detangle your hair gently rather than pulling or brushing through knots aggressively.
-
How to detangle: Start at the ends of the hair. Gradually work your way upwards towards the roots. Hold the hair near the roots while detangling to avoid putting unnecessary tension on the hair or lace. Use a suitable wig brush, wide-tooth comb or your fingers depending on the texture.
- Never start brushing from the roots downwards, as this can push tangles further down the hair and cause unnecessary shedding or breakage.
- For curly and wavy textures, be very gentle when detangling. Excessive brushing can disrupt the curl or wave pattern and create unnecessary frizz.
- For curly textures, finger-detangling or using a wide-tooth comb is often preferable.
- One of the simplest ways to maintain your unit is to keep it properly detangled. Always detangle your hair gently rather than pulling or brushing through knots aggressively.
-
Keep Your Hair Unit Moisturized.
- Human hair can become dry, particularly when it is regularly exposed to heat, styling products and environmental factors. Just as you would moisturize and condition your natural hair, your hair unit needs moisture too.
- Use a good quality moisturizing or conditioning product when needed, concentrating on the mid-lengths and ends of the hair.
- Avoid applying excessive amounts of heavy products. Product buildup can make the hair feel greasy, weighed down or difficult to style
-
Wash Your Hair Unit.
- Your wig should be washed as needed. How often you need to wash your unit will depend on how frequently you wear it, how much product you use and your lifestyle. If you wear your unit regularly, sweat in it, exercise in it or use a lot of styling products, you may need to wash it more frequently.
- To wash your unit, first detangle it. Then use lukewarm water and allow the water to run in the direction of the hair. Avoid aggressively rubbing or bunching the hair together. Apply a gentle, moisturizing shampoo and carefully work it through the hair. Do not scrub the hair aggressively, as this can cause tangling. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm or cool water until the shampoo has been completely removed. Apply a moisturizing conditioner to the hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. Allow the conditioner to sit according to the product's instructions before rinsing thoroughly. Gently squeeze out excess water and use a towel to blot the hair. Do not aggressively rub the hair with a towel. Allow the unit to air dry whenever possible.
-
Be Careful With Heat.
- Human hair can be heat styled, but human hair does not mean heat proof hair. Repeated exposure to high temperatures can cause dryness, split ends, breakage and permanent changes to the hair's texture.
- If you use heat, always use a heat protector, use the lowest temperature that will achieve your desired style, avoid repeatedly passing a hot tool over the same section of hair, try not to use heat every day and give your unit a break from heat styling when possible.
- The less unnecessary heat your unit is exposed to, the longer it is likely to maintain its quality.
-
Take Care of Your Lace.
- Your lace is one of the most delicate parts of your wig unit, especially if you have chosen HD lace. Avoid excessive pulling, scratching or brushing directly over the lace.
- When styling or detangling, be gentle around the lace and avoid putting unnecessary tension on the hair that has been ventilated into it.
- If you wear your wig unit glueless, be careful when removing your wig. Do not pull the unit off aggressively. Gently lift the wig away from your head rather than pulling directly on the lace. This helps reduce unnecessary stress on the lace and can help prolong the life of your unit.
-
Protect Your Hair While You Sleep.
- If you sleep in your hair, protecting it at night is important. We recommend wrapping or loosely securing the hair before going to bed and using a silk or satin bonnet or scarf. You can also sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase for additional protection. Why? Because cotton can create friction between the hair and your pillow, which can contribute to tangling, frizz and dryness.
- Before bed, gently detangle your hair unit, put it into a loose braid or other protective style if appropriate for your texture, cover it with a silk or satin bonnet/scarf and avoid sleeping with the hair tangled underneath you.
- For curly and wavy textures, protecting the hair overnight is particularly helpful for preserving the curl or wave pattern.
-
Giving Your Hair Unit A Break.
- If you have multiple units, rotating between them can help extend the life of each one.
- Constant wearing, styling, washing and manipulation naturally creates more wear and tear over time.
- Giving your unit a break allows you to properly wash, condition, detangle and store it before wearing it again.
HOW LONG DOES A HAIR UNIT LAST?
-
- From our experience and reviews, Amoke Ade Hair units can last anywhere from 3-5 years.
- There is no exact number of months or years that we can promise for a wig unit because its lifespan depends heavily on how often it is worn, how it is installed, how it is styled and, most importantly, how it is maintained.
- A unit that is worn occasionally and carefully maintained will naturally experience less wear than a unit that is worn every day and regularly exposed to heat and styling.
- The quality of the hair matters, but so does the care you give it.
- Think of it the same way you would your own hair: the better you care for it, the better it can look and the longer you can enjoy it.
-
What Can Shorten The Life Of Your Hair Unit?
- Excessive heat styling
- Aggressive brushing or detangling
- Constant manipulation
- Excessive product buildup
- Sleeping without protecting the hair
- Leaving the hair tangled
- Not washing and conditioning the hair when necessary
- Rough handling of the lace
- Improper storage
- Excessive exposure to chlorine or salt water
HOW TO STORE YOUR HAIR.
-
- Before storing your wig, make sure the hair is completely dry. Gently detangle it. Make sure there is no excessive product buildup.
- Place the unit on a wig stand or store it neatly in a clean, breathable storage bag (like the free dustbag provided with every order).
- Keep it somewhere cool and dry. Keep it away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
- Never store your wig while it is wet or damp, as this can encourage odour and other issues.
KEEPING YOUR LACE LOOKING ITS BEST.
-
- Your lace is one of the most delicate parts of your wig unit, so it is important to handle it with care. With proper maintenance, you can help keep your lace looking clean, seamless and natural wear after wear.
- Be gentle when brushing and styling. Avoid pulling or tugging on the lace, particularly around the hairline. When detangling, work from the ends upwards and avoid placing unnecessary tension on the lace.
- Be mindful of adhesives and products. If you use glue, adhesive or other styling products around your lace, make sure they are removed properly and gently. Product build-up can affect the appearance of your lace and may cause unnecessary wear over time.
- Keep your lace clean. Regularly clean your lace to remove product, oils and residue. Avoid aggressively scrubbing or picking at the lace, as this can cause damage.
-
Your Lace Can Be Replaced.
- One of the benefits of investing in a quality hair unit is that you do not necessarily have to replace the entire unit when the lace eventually needs replacing.
- If your lace becomes worn or damaged after multiple installs, the lace can be replaced while keeping the hair itself. This means you can have new lace sewn onto your existing wig unit or sew-in rather than throwing the entire unit away.
- With proper care, your hair can continue to be enjoyed through multiple installs, and replacing the lace when necessary can give your unit a fresh start while extending its overall lifespan.
- Give your lace a break when needed. Frequent pulling, excessive heat, rough handling and repeated installations can gradually weaken your lace. Taking proper care of your unit between installs can help extend its lifespan.
With the right care and maintenance, you can enjoy your unit wear after wear, install after install.
